Why strength training is essential as we age

Updated: 5 minutes ago

Growing older doesn't mean slowing down.

In fact, staying active through regular exercise is one of the best ways to maintain your independence, improve your health and continue doing the things you love for years to come.

At Gym Lab Apollo Bay, we believe exercise is about so much more than fitness. It's about helping you move confidently, recover from injury, manage ongoing health conditions and enjoy everyday life.

Whether you're lifting grandchildren, gardening, walking along the beach, travelling, playing sport or simply wanting to feel stronger getting out of a chair, movement matters.

Strength training isn't just for young people

One of the biggest myths we hear is that strength training is only for athletes or younger people.

From around our 30s, we naturally begin to lose muscle mass and strength. Without regular physical activity, particularly resistance training, this gradual decline can affect balance, mobility, bone health and independence as we age.

The good news? Our bodies are incredibly adaptable. Research consistently shows that older adults can make significant improvements in strength, balance and physical function through regular resistance training, even if they've never lifted weights before.

Regular resistance training can help:

  • Build and maintain muscle strength.

  • Improve bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

  • Support healthy joints and improve mobility.

  • Increase balance and coordination.

  • Reduce the risk of falls.

  • Improve posture.

  • Make everyday activities easier.

  • Boost confidence, energy and overall wellbeing.

How often should adults do strength training?

According to the Australian Physical Activity Guidelines, adults should complete muscle-strengthening activities on at least two days each week. For adults aged 65 years and over, strength training should be combined with regular balance and mobility exercises to help reduce the risk of falls and maintain independence.

For those new to strength training, the Victorian Better Health Channel recommends:

  • 2–3 resistance training sessions each week

  • 8–10 exercises targeting the major muscle groups

  • 1–3 sets of 8–12 repetitions

  • Allowing at least 48 hours before training the same muscle group again

Remember, consistency is far more important than perfection. Even two well planned sessions each week can make a significant difference over time.

Movement supports your whole body

Exercise benefits far more than your muscles.

Regular movement has been shown to improve heart health, reduce the risk of many chronic diseases, support healthy blood sugar levels, improve sleep, reduce stress and anxiety, maintain cognitive function and enhance overall quality of life.

You don't need to spend hours in the gym to experience these benefits. Small, consistent sessions each week often lead to the biggest long-term improvements.

Exercise that's tailored to you

One of the things that makes Gym Lab unique is our close partnership with the Allied Health team at Great Ocean Road Health.

If you're returning after an injury, living with arthritis, osteoporosis, diabetes, chronic pain or another health condition, you don't have to navigate your fitness journey alone.

Exercise Physiologists

Exercise Physiologists specialise in prescribing evidence-based exercise to help people manage chronic health conditions, recover from injury or surgery, improve mobility and build strength safely.

Working alongside Gym Lab, they can develop an individualised exercise program tailored to your goals, medical history and current fitness level, giving you the confidence to exercise safely and effectively.

Physiotherapists

Physiotherapists assess, diagnose and treat injuries affecting muscles, joints and movement. Whether you're recovering from an injury, managing ongoing pain or looking to prevent future problems, they can help identify the underlying cause and guide your recovery.

Together, our teams can help make your return to exercise safe, achievable and enjoyable.

A welcoming community for every age

Not everyone wants to train the same way, and that's exactly how it should be.

Whether you enjoy working out independently, participating in group fitness, practising yoga or Pilates, or would like a class specifically designed for older adults, there's something for everyone at Gym Lab.

Our Golden Grooves classes focus on improving strength, balance, mobility and confidence in a friendly, supportive environment and not to mention FUN lead by our bubbly instructor Nat. Every exercise can be modified, every fitness level is welcome, and everyone is encouraged to work at their own pace.

Invest in your future self

Healthy ageing isn't about avoiding birthdays, it's about giving yourself the best opportunity to keep living life on your terms.

Every walk, every class and every strength session helps build a stronger, healthier future. The choices you make today can help you remain active, independent and confident for many years to come.

You don't have to be fit to start.

You don't have to be young to get stronger.

You simply need to begin.

Whether that's joining a Golden Grooves class, training independently in our 24/7 gym, attending one of our group fitness classes, or working with an Exercise Physiologist or Physiotherapist from Great Ocean Road Health, we're here to support you every step of the way.
